In My Heart Is Coltrane

In my heart is Coltrane,

precise addictions &

improvised optimism.

Our joy a lottery

anticipating

“The upswing in the industry.”

While fundraising

for strangers,

mood-raising at breakfast

ignoring Visa

and buying parting gifts,

I notice

the rhythm off-kilter

the rabbiting plans,

the fear-punctured shelter.

Dear sons:

Please be 9 to 5ers.

Men who know what to wear.

Whose offices can be locked

and walked from.

Who vacation yearly

and whose deposits

drop

ca-ching

ca-shing

click

click

slick

metronome steady.
